Freedom
Chekov <3
Well, my mom left for *ANOTHER* practicum today. She'll be getting back on Thursday, but I'll already be gone to the weekend camp. I'm really excited about that. I've honestly never been to a sleepaway camp. Yeah. EVER. Sad, isn't it? It's not that I'm sheltered, I just never remember to sign up for anything, lol :)
Speaking of not remembering, I made a list of all the stuff I need to take to camp just to make sure I don't have a brain lapse and forget my tooth brush or something crucial like that, lol! The list is forty things long. Yeah. Forty. And--
OMG, I forgot to list PAJAMAS!
THAT would have a crisis. For me.
Anyway. Sorry.
My sister (Lizzy) and I made up a dance to the song "Arabian Nights" from "Aladin". I choreographed it, and it's awesome, if I do say so myself ;)
Then we watched some of "Aladin", which is, if you don't already know, the greatest Disney cartoon ever made. Just getting that out there.
I'm in an odd mood today. Kind of...hyper-minded and typical-teenaged-girl-y.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ate dinner, went to get ice cream, now I'm back. And I'm not in that weird mood anymore, so you don't have to run screaming or anything :) I got a strawberry fruit-juice-pop thing. It was good. I don't ususually like stuff with fruit chunks in it, though, so I was sort of surprised.
I just remembered that today is Word Day! Alright! My word for the day is...
Freedom.
It's such a powerful word, you know? I don't even know how to reach down deep enough to get the full meaning, but, as always, I'm gonna try.
What IS freedom? Freedom is the power to make your own decisions. But it's more than that. Freedom is something we as human inherently crave. Something in all of us wants desperately to make our own desicions, to control our own lives.
There are so many different types of freedom. Freedom of speech, religion, press, and then more obscure freedoms: the freedom not to feel intimidated at school, the freedom to be yourself, the freedom to learn and stretch your mind.
America is built completely on the idea of freedom. America is all about freedom. We fought and died to earn it, and we will fight and die to keep it.
On the other hand, while America is all about freedom and theoretically being yourself, unfortunately its citizens are constantly pushed to regulate themselves. Not by any government inforced law, but just by society itself. I know sometimes I don't feel free to be myself around my friends. I'm sure we all feel like that sometimes. That's where the smaller definitions of freedom come in.
Freedom is all around us, all through us. I'm not really sure why, but it's human nature to crave freedom. And there are so many different types of freedom, which means there are so many types that people can take away, and so many ways to do that.
We need to guard our freedom carefully. Especially we Americans because with the government making more and more restraining laws, I think it's really important that we all maintain a sense of self and of who we are, what we want, why we're here.
Freedom is so important. If it gets taken away...we aren't even ourselves anymore. Freedom is what makes us able to be ourselves. I'm free to be me, you're free to be you. If that freedom gets taken away, essentially individuality will go with it. Freedom is who we are. I think the word and the concept mean something a little different to each person.
I sort of feel like I went on a bunny trail this whole post, but I hope you sort of understood what I was trying to say?
Freedom is everything, but different for everyone at the same time.
What's freedom to you?
For me, I think, it's the power to carpe diem every day--however *I* see fit.
Setting Your Standards and "Star Trek"
We're going to see "Star Trek" today!! Either at 3:35 or 4:00 depending on which theater we go to. I vote the 4:00 theater. I hate the other one. The seats are bad and the screen is small and it just feels cheap and dirty. But I think that's the one we'll probably end up going to because it IS cheaper. *sob* Oh well. I'll try to have a good time anyway XD Just kidding. I know I will. David and Daniel and probably this girl named Cassidy and our families will all be there. Still, I am *PRAYING* that we go to the nicer theater...
Well, I don't really have a good God concept today...Earwen has been posting a lot about love lately though, and she put a list of what she wants in a guy on her blog. I thought that was a cool idea. I actually already made a list, but I guess I'll post it, lol! It can sort of tie in to a God thing, too.
List:
1. Christian
2. Funny
3. Respects my love of writing
4. Intelligent
5. Adventurous
6. Loves kids
7. Good-looking doesn't hurt
8. Outgoing
9. Protective (but not controlling, you know)
10. Loving
Those are pretty much the non-optional ones.
And now I'm wondering what my point was...
Oh, yeah!
I think it's very important to have some expectations. It's good to have some undebatable things listed while you AREN'T in "love", because when you are, it's so difficult to be objective and level-headed. If you have your standards set ahead of time and make a promise to keep to them, you won't have to make the decision in the heat of the moment.
I know this isn't strictly a God thing (I decided to change "Bible Day" to "God Day"), but it can be. I know that God wants us to have standards. God love us and doesn't want us to settle for anything but what's best for us.
*feels self-conscious of spiling her guts like this*
Anyway.
"Star Trek" is the only really big thing that's happening today, so I'm just gonna say bye :)
Bye :D
DANG IT.
I had a whole post written and published, and I went back to add something to it. When I published it again, ALL BUT THE FIRST SENTENCE HAD BEEN DELETED.
Yeah. I'm so mad I feel like crying. I don't even remember what I said! But it was pretty good! And I worked on it for a long freaking time! GAAAAAAAAH!! And the whole thing is just messed up. Like, I can't change the font or anything for some reason.
*grrrr*
Okay, let's see...what did I say...
We're going to watch "The King and I" tonight and I'm excited because it has Yul Brynner (spelling?) in it and I love his accent. I love accents.
And it's still possible that we're gonna go see "Star Trek" tomorrow. Yay.
And my Carpe Noctem thought is:
--------------------------------------
The Problem with Global Warming:
It doesn't exist.
Yeah, you read that right.
Now, before you roll your eyes, say "typical skeptic" and close this window, maybe you want to hear what I have to say?
I'm not an out-and-out skeptic. Not in the usual sense anyway. Yes, I am very skeptical of things until I have looked into them myself, but I DO look into them. I don't just dismiss every theory that sounds unpleasant; I do actually research them first.
I didn't actually challenge the theory of global warming until last semester. I just figured that it was true, or at least mostly true. Well, it's not quite.
Basically, the theory is that if the concentration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases were to increase too much, the earth would get too warm. (This is what global warming is, obviously, lol!) As civilization has become more industrialized, people have been burning a lot more fuel than they used to. Before the Industrial Revolution, people burned wood and coal to heat houses and businesses, but that was about it. As a result of the Industrial Revolution, however, people are burning coal, wood, natural gas and gasoline in huge quantities to generate electrical power, run manufacturing machinery, etc. As a result, we have been putting a lot more carbon dioxide into the air than we used to.
This is where worries about global warming come from. Carbon dioxide is a participant in the greenhouse effect, which warms the planet. We also know that the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has been rising steadily over the last 80 years or so. Well, increased carbon dioxide means an increased greenhouse effect, which will result in global warming right? Well, not exactly.
Although the fear of global warming IS based on scientific reasoning, it's actually more complex than most people think. If you look at most scientific graphs, you can tell that over the past 80 years, the amount of carbon has risen, then dropped back down to extremely low, where it is today. Every once in a while, the carbon dioxide level in the air seems to rise, but it always drops back down again. Thus, global warming isn't actually a problem at all. It's almost a hoax even.
Many people who talk about global warming discuss the fact that in their area of the world, the winters have been unusually warm over the past few years. They say global warming must be happening. This neglects the fact that the entire world is often quite different from one person's corner of it. While one area of the world might be experiencing unusually warm winters, other parts of the world might be having abnormally cool summers. As a result, the *global* temperature does not change very much, despite what might be happening in one region of it.
It is also common to hear that certain large ice sheets that have been the same size for a long time are now starting to melt. This is then used to conclude that the earth ahs a whole is getting warmer. However, this is not sound scientific reasoning. The fact taht an ice sheet is melting is only evidence that *the part of the world that holds the ice sheet* is warming up. For example, a large ice sheet in the Antarctic Peninsula, the Larsen B ice shelf, has experienced a remarkable decline in size over the past few years. Some say that this is evidence for global warming. The problem is that the west Antarctic ice sheet has been *thickening* over the past few years. Thus, while the Antarctic Peninsula is getting warmer, the western part of the Antarctic is getting cooler. It turns out that temperature measurements of Antarctica indicate that overall, Antarctica has actually been cooling since the 1960's.
But, if you dig hard enough, you CAN find *some* evidence to show the earth is warming up as a whole. For example, land-based temperature measurements do show a slight warming trend, even over the past twenty years. The problem with these data, is that they ignore the 70% of the earth's surface, because they ignore what is happening over the oceans. When the entire globe is measured by satellites, no significant warming trend is seen.
Thus, to believe that global warming is occurring, you are forced to rely on the least reliable data and ignore the most reliable data. That's not good scientific practice.
(By the way, this information came primarily from "Exploring Creation with Physical Science" by Dr. Jay L. Wile.)
-------------------------------
Basically it was that, only better and with a better introduction :'(
And then I complained about wanting to go outside, but hating my new house's yard because it's boring and doesn't feel like home...
Then this is where I said that no one took my Challenge from yesterday, but that it's okay...
Then I said something deep and awesome...
Then I said bye and put my signature like this only probably better:
Bye.
GRR.
Challenge and Update
This practicum was okay. I'm not nearly as tired after this one, so that's a giant plus. Also, the house we stayed at was *GORGEOUS* and the people were *AWESOME AND NICE*. The only real bad things were that I worked in Logic camp and ended up hating it, and one of the helpers IRRITATED ME TO NO END.
I thought I would LOVE logic, you know, but it turns out I hate working with 9-13 year olds. Hate it. I don't know why, but the 9 to 11 year olds are all brats, and the upper 11-13 year olds are all boring. *shrugs*
And then one of the helpers just got on my nerves. He was so weird. And VERY immature. And he was sort of mean to this other little helper. And he was just SOOOOOO immature!! GOSH! Lol :)
When we got home today, we chilled for an hour, then ate a quick supper and went to a play that this guy from our church is in. The play was "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat". I love that play! I had seen it once before when the Broadway version came through, and then we have the Donny Osmond version on DVD.
The play was so good! Joseph was good. He had super curly hair, and he was a good singer. The narrator was AMAZING though. Even better than the one that travels with the Broadway version (my mom and I saw that a year or so ago). The show was really well done. There weren't many props, but somehow everything was still elaborate...I don't know how to describe it. Some of the brothers were around my age, so it was cool to see that.
NEW THING: I want to be an actress.
Not because I saw this play or anything like that, though. It's something I've been wanting to do for a month or so now. I don't know how serious the desire is. I mean, I REALLY want to be an actress right now, but the urge came on so quickly; I'm sure it could disappear equally quickly. The funny thing is, four different people tonight told me I should act in one of the next plays. Maybe it's a God thing? I don't know.
I am going to looking into *maybe* doing "Mulan" and/or "The King and I". I would just audition and then take whatever part I got. As long as it was a girl. Some girls in "Joseph" had to play guys, and I am NOT doing that, lol!
Back to "Joseph". I love that Bible story. It is my absolute FAVORITE. There are a few reasons for that, but I want to see if anyone can guess the main one. Just curious. I know some of you will if you're reading this (*cough* EllieBandGabrielleandLizzy *cough*), but I want to see if anyone surprises me.
Since this is Friday, that will be the Challenge: Figure out why the story of Joseph is Kendra's favorite Bible story.
If you don't know the story that well, here's a condensed (REALLY, *sadly* condensed) version.
Well, even though I'm not AS tired, I'm still pretty worn-out, so I'll just say a couple more things:
WE MIGHT BE GOING TO SEE "STAR TREK" SUNDAY AFTERNOON WITH DAVID AND DANIEL AND THEIR FAMILY!! HOW AWESOME IS THAT??!! I AM SO THRILLED! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
And I would like to point out the results of the "Star Trek" poll about whether or not you liked it. Well, only two options had any votes for them: the "I haven't seen it option" and the "I LOVED IT" option. Therefore (of the people who voted), if you saw it, you loved it! SO GO SEE IT!
Okay. I'm done.
Good night.
Quel du.
Carpe diem.
Over 'n' out.
*Temporarily* Trekkie
Sorry. I promise this won't last long, but right now I'm still in love with this movie. I was shocked at how good it was!! Really, it's been a long, long, LONG time since a movie blew me away like this. Everything was so...awesome. And since today is Picture Day, I decided to let myself go ;)
But, you know me. I'll get over this ridiculous obsessiveness within a couple of weeks, a month at the most. Remember my little freak-out over Darth Vader in February or whatever? I'm telling you, I'll see this kind of stuff and go crazy, and then I'll go back to normal. But I still love it. Like, I mean, really, Darth Vader is awesome, right?
*sigh*
The weirdest part is, I don't think of myself as being a SciFi kind of person. Like, at all. Most of it bores me and annoys me. And yet, I love Star Wars and Star Trek...*sigh* I am a mystery even to myself ;)
Anyway.
So, Captain Kirk is pretty awesome. He's probably my favorite character. (There's a shock, right? But at least I didn't fall in love with the villain this time.)
The casting for this was unbelievable!! All the characters look just like younger versions of the original guys (and girl). Spock was definitely the best match, but Captain Kirk was great, too.
There's lots of action in the movie, the plot was great, the acting was good, there was some really funny lines (LOLS), and everything was just awesome!! Everyone should see this movie. Lizzy (my little sister) even liked it!!! *gasp* And she HATES this kind of stuff. Well, she likes Star Wars okay. But usually all the fighting and stuff she doesn't like. There was a little bit of a guy screaming, but I got through that and it didn't bother me as much as I was afraid it might. *shrug* I guess Star Trek is just that awesome.
'Kay. I'll shut up now. If I can. You should go see the movie. It's really good.
P.S. Checkoff (however you spell it) was absolutely *adorable*. In the picture with the old and the new people together, he's the second guy on the bottom row.
Making Memories
-Church was good.
-went to see Star Trek. ABSOLUTELY *AMAZING* MOVIE. WOW. I HAVEN'T BEEN THAT IMPRESSED WITH A MOVIE SINCE LIKE...I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHEN. IT WAS STINKIN' EPICCCCCCCCCC! WOW. GO SEE IT NOW. SO GOOD. SO GOOD. SOO GOOD!
-I ate a giant (GIANT) Rice Krispy treat at the movie, and those are my favorite.
-On the way home from the movie, Mrs. Martha (Matt and Katie's mom) called and asked if we wanted to go out on the boat. We said yes.
-Go home and change into bathing suits. I wash off my make up so it won't run when I do stuff in the water.
-They pick us up at the beach (in the boat).
-Beautiful weather.
-IT'S JUST US!!!!!!!! For the first time in actually-not-exaggerating YEARS (only two, but still, YEARS), it was just us. No other families, no catches, just us and them.
-Had an amazing time in the water fooling around like old times.
-The ride back, Mrs. Martha gave in when we begged her to go top speed. We flew over waves and the boat went crazy. It's times like that when I'm sure I have the best childhood of anyone in the world. I mean, being with my closest friends and the wind and the water and being perfectly happy...how can you top that?
-We all decided to order pizza and meet back at Matt and Katie's house. They dropped us off at our house, though, so we could get out of our bathing suits. I just put on, like, almost-pajamas, lol!
-Watched "Marley and Me" while eating pizza and warding off the dog, Hershey :)
-Katie fell asleep like halfway into it :)
- Matt was adorably sad at the end (if you've seen it, you know why; if you haven't, I'm not saying anything ;) ).
-We came home, and I'm typing this.
-I get to sleep in tomorrow.
What a great day, you know? Don't you just LOVE those days when you just smile and think, "I am the luckiest person in the world right now." *sighs contentedly* Carpe diem, y'all! You never know when you're making a memory!
