Accio New Post!

I read "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" over the summer because I figured it was a cultural thing and I needed to. It was cartoony ("Muggles"? Really?) and childish (Minerva McGonagall? Please.) and I couldn't see why anyone would like the books.

I felt obligated to read "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" after that because my friend wanted me to. It wasn't really better, although I was at least used to the stupid lingo.

Then I read through "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." I actually liked that one. I liked Sirius. I read over phrases like "Let's use Polyjuice Potion" and "Try Summoning it" without thinking.

I started "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and couldn't do it. It was mind-numbingly boring and I quit, finished trying. Who cares THAT MUCH about Quidditch??

Two months later, I forced myself to try "Goblet of Fire" again. After the beginning, I got into it. It was...great?? I got sort of into it, in a way.

I wanted to read the next one, so I read "Harry Potter and the Order Phoenix." ...I really liked it a lot. The book didn't even start out boring, though Harry was a whiny git at first. The whole thing was becoming surprisingly interesting and extremely complex. I was delighted at how insignificant things started to fit together so perfectly.

I devoured "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" in like two and a half days. I laughed at Ron, marveled at Hermione and cringed at Harry. It was second nature to summon things (Accio!) and I registered the complicated fighting scenes (Stupify! Protego! Petrificus Totalus!) without difficulty.\
I eagerly read and savored "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." I cried. It was intense and realistic. It felt like I was watching my friends right before my eyes. I knew their histories. I knew their styles. I had watched them grow up for seven years.

I finished the series, including one of the most satisfying epilogues I've read, on Christmas Day (really the day after; it was 12:46). I never intended to like Harry Potter. And I'm not sure why I do. It IS cartoony at times, and I'm not sure that it's exceptionally well-written. But...for some reason, I DO like them. I like them very much. And I'm sad they're over.

I know a lot of you are very anti-Harry Potter. Whatever. I was too. But there's a lot to appreciate in them besides witchcraft and wizardry. There's mystery and humor and realism and morals and great quotes and strong characters and enough creativity for half the Renaissance period.

Stop judging the books before you read them. I was just as guilty as y'all are; I condemned them too (and I still wouldn't NECESSARILY recommend them for impressionable little kids). But I now stand on the issue of HP where I do with the dread T series:

If you haven't read them, don't judge them. (Ah ah ah, no buts. Stop it. Stop--STOPIT. Shush.) It's just as bad as calling a cheerleader stupid or a homeschooler unsocial or a nerd creepy.

By the way, you know my obsession with (the amazing, hilarious, awesome, witty, clever, sarcastic, arrogant, extremely attractive) Jace? And the trilogy he lives in called "The Mortal Instruments?"

Well.

Cassandra Clare has started a new trilogy that happens hundreds of years before "Mortal Instruments." I've been wanting book one, "The Clockwork Angel" for months. I got it yesterday at Sam's (that's like Costco)!

It.

Is.

Great.

I'm only about a third of the way done, but it's great! I'm not completely in love with the characters yet, but that's only because I'm not finished. They're great. Cassandra Clare did a great job of creating a new story and new characters. I would have been tempted to make my hero and heroine just like Jace and Clary, even if by accident. The main guy, Will, is witty like Jace, but he's completely his own character, too.

I've also laughed out loud about 10 times already. I pretty much NEVER laugh out loud at books. I mean, inside I might be rolling, and I might grin or chuckle, but Cassandra Clare always has me giggling out loud and re-reading paragraphs just because they're hilarious.

Seriously, I'd read this book for Henry alone.

And he's not even the cockycutefunnyguy of the story.

Avatar Review (among other things)

Tonight I was supposed to be babysitting, but that got canceled so we're going over to Matt and Katie's (little brother and little sister's) house for a New Year's party. Tons of people are going to be there. Tons. It's going to be...utterly insane. I'm talking like seven families. Around 30 people. In one house. >:D This should be fun.

Today has been fairly uneventful. I went to be at...uh, just...late, and woke up at 11:30 :O My mom was surprisingly cool with that. *shrug* Okay, I'll take it. Then, I talked on gmail (what else is new?), then ate lunch, then went on a walk with my family. We took our black lab, Licorice (or Licky for short). She's my baby :)

The wind was COLD, and it made my sinuses hurt, but the walk was still fun. The sun actually came out about halfway into the walk, which was great. One thing (of many XD) that I hate about winter: it's always either nighttime or cloudy. No sun. And I LOVE sun.

We walked around in a house that's under construction. My dad and Licky go there a lot, but Licky won't go up the stairs because they're construction steps and she can see through them. But guess what? When I was there, she went up the steps with me :) *Aw* I love my doggie :D

Anyway, the house was nice, but not a Mr. Leon House (Mr. Leon is Matt and Katie's dad). Once you get used to looking, you can just tell when a house is one Mr. Leon has built. LOL, after ten years of walking through house after house that he's built, I've become pretty good at identifying his work.

Hmm, that came out really stuck up. LOL, I didn't mean it like that XD

But anyway, so far today has been good, but pretty chill. Tonight, though, at Matt and Katie's house... O.O :) That's really gonna be something to post about XD

Oh, a quick word about Avatar for those of you who might be wondering what I thought of it:

On a scale of 1-10, my personal rating is about 5, maybe 6. The graphics were AMAZING, absolutely stunning. The acting was fine, the script was fine, but the plot...the plot (in my opinion) wasn't very good.

Plot (no spoilers): The American army is trying to get to this really awesome, valuable rock found on the planet Pandora. Unfortunately, the Na'vi, who live on Pandora, have a village right over the bed of really awesome, valuable rock. The American army wants the rock.

Whoo hoo XD

That wouldn't have been so bad if the villains hadn't been so BLAH. The main "evil guy", an American colonel, is mean for one reason only: the wants the rock.

...

What? That doesn't seem like a good enough reason to be a raving mad evil guy determined to kill everyone in his way?

I didn't think so either.

He was VERY two-dimensional, which is especially pathetic because we saw it in freaking 3D ;)

One last issue:

The movie portrays Na'vi (eco-friendly natives who want nothing but peace and happen to be sitting on a valuable resource) as the terrorists of the real world. The movie then portrays the crazed American army who will stop at nothing to get at the resource as America.

Think I'm reading too much into this? I am not. The comparison is fairly in-your-face. Notice the phrases "shock and awe" and "preemptive strike". Whoever made the movie was clearly trying to show the American army as evil and the terrorists as victims. If you like that sort of thing, fine. I did not.

So, that's my take on the movie. I did not really like it. I may want to see it again, but I was disappointed greatly.

New Moon Review

Before I go into my take on the New Moon movie, let's review my thoughts on the Twilight movie:

Overall, I gave it two out of five stars. It was not good. The acting was poor, the script was gosh-awful, and the special effects were something close to Power Rangers. On top of that, the storyline of the book was not respected and the directing was much too artsy for me (thank you, Catherine Hardwicke).

I went into New Moon fairly excited. I don't know what exactly I was expecting. I was mostly just trying to "carpe diem" and have a good time regardless. Cassie Roads and I got to the theater two and a half hours ahead of time, and that wait was an interesting experience in itself (stay tuned for elaboration in a later post). When the movie finally started, I felt that thrill that WE'RE FINALLY SEEING IT!! It was 12:01, but I was ready.

The first scene was awesome! I was immediately drawn in, but still had my guard up. I figured the movie would go south pretty quickly. Haha, guess what?

It didn't.

Half an hour into the movie, I forgot to be cynical. I was caught up in the story, even though I knew what was coming. Every scene fell into place, revealing a story almost exactly like the book. The acting was GOOD, the script was VERY GOOD, the special effects were GREAT. The scenes with the wolves were mind-boggling, and the vampire-speed was about a million times better than the puppet-theater quality of Twilight.

Taylor Lautner is officially Jacob-in-the-Flesh. He did an incredible job. I had my doubts from Twilight, his acting was pretty weak there. In the beginning of New Moon he was a bit shaky, too, but that may have been in the script. (To be honest, I think it was the wig he had to wear. I think it made him uncomfortable, LOL!)

It takes a lot to satisfy a cynic like me, but, boy, was I satisfied!!! I became so wrapped up in the story, I just forgot other stuff. It's an incredibly intriguing, intense film. There are hardly words to express it. I raved the entire way back from the theater, my eyes shining, my heart pounding, my brain working! I searched for things to find fault with, and couldn't come up with a thing! (One thing: Seth and Leah Clearwater do not appear. Hmm. Still, minor.) I was blown away, just really blown away.

I definitely think the new director, Chris Weitz, made all the difference in the world. I didn't like Catherine Hardwicke from the beginning, and apparently no one else did either. Weitz was officially chosen as the director of New Moon only twenty-three days after Twilight hit theaters.

Long story short, I WAS FREAKING BLOWN AWAY.

IT.

WAS.

AWESOME.

And I am going to be at the theater! Cassie Roads and I will be arriving at the theater two hours ahead of time to ensure a good seat. And I'm still not holding my breath for one. I have a sneaking suspicion that there will be Twi-hards and fanpires lined up outside as early as 6pm this evening.

Can you believe that last year I was about to wet my pants to go see Twilight? LOL! Boy, how times have changed. I've barely had time to think about New Moon until, like, today. I kept thinking I'd start getting excited...but I never did. I'm definitely excited now, but it's more like a vague smile as I participate in a fad than a screaming obsession.

Maturing? *shrug* Maybe :)

So, in honor of the Day of Release, I thought I'd do a Twilight post containing all my thoughts about it. Feel free to roll your eyes and skip this post if you so desire :)

I've already state my opinion on the Why-Christians-Should-Hate-Twilight issue, so I won't go into that again (I believe Twilight is perfectly okay for Believers, by the way). If you want to here my relatively-short-for-me rant, click HERE.

TWILIGHT:
Great beginning to the story. Edward is awesome in this one because you don't get to know Jacob that much XD Edward and Bella's relationship is fun and healthy and Edward growls several times. *girlish giggle*

NEW MOON:
**SPOILER ALERT**
Edward leaves!! :O *gasp* Which sucks the first time you read the book, but then when you read it again, you're not as shocked and you can enjoy Jacob more. Then the book is pretty awesome. Lots of Jacob and Jacob-esque humor. Bella and Edward's relationship spirals quickly into the utterly ridiculous and unhealthy stage.

ECLIPSE:
Definitely my ultimate LEAST FAVORITE. Edward is back (*grumble*), and a complete control-freak. He keeps Bella from her other friends and from her best friend, Jacob. Bella and Edward's relationship is stupid and creepy, and Jacob is constantly fighting for attention. There are some good moments, of course, but over all I wanted to slap Edward the entire time.

BREAKING DAWN:
**BIGGGGGG SPOILER ALERT**
Hehe, PG-13. No, really, it's not that bad. Bella and Edward get married, and they do what married couples do. So it's not bad morally, but maybe not for little kids either...Still, you get to see Emmett a LOT more, which is a huge plus to me. Jacob appears plenty, too, and there's even a section of the book written from his point of view! Awesome!

So there's my view on the books. I'll just wrap this rant up with some lovely cast photos :D

That's how I feel right now. My computer is being unbelievably retarded. I've been trying to load the same page since--are you ready for this?--LAST NIGHT. I've been trying to get to the same thing since LAST NIGHT! I started trying at four in the afternoon, tried until six, ate dinner, came back, tried again until ten-thirty. Then I got up this morning, did math, then came back and tried for FOUR MORE HOURS. IT WON'T FREAKIN' LOAD!!!!!! I'm so mad I can't even BEGIN to explain how annoying this is!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Okay. Sorry. I actually have some really happy stuff to tell you! I FINISHED THE FINAL FARSALA BOOK LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND IT WAS SO AMAZING!!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh! It was soooooo good! I actually cried because it was over. Yeah, I actually did that. But I was so sad that the books are over! I love the characters! They feel like friends. I thought I felt like that about other books, but this time the feeling of closeness with the characters is unbelievable. I feel like I know them, and now they've left. Their story is over, and I'll never know what happens after this. I love them!! *sigh*

Best books I've ever, ever read. Sorry, Inkheart, Eragon, Twilight, the Mortal Instruments trilogy, the Farsala trilogy surpasses all of you. Sure some things were sad, and some things were unexpected, but...wow. Just wow. Hilari Bell has to be one of the most brilliant writers ever. Seriously. I'm speechless. Amazing books, amazing ending, amazing characters, *sob* I'm gonna miss them so much! *soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooob*

Tonight I get to play with the little kids! I'm so excited! Playing with them always reminds me of...better times. Times when I was the little kid and was being played with. Good times. I'm glad to be able to help these little kids have memories like that of their own.

It's sunny today! My garden is lookin' good. The seeds haven't sprouted yet, but the tomatoes and pepper plants look happy. They're still pretty small, but they look healthy so far. I've planted squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers. Red peppers, I think. Lol, I can't remember for sure...but I'm pretty sure they're red.

Oh, whoops! Today is quote day! Alrighty :D Here's the quote of the week:

"That doesn't matter," said Jiaan. "What matters is that we have to be better than the Hrum. We have to be. Because if we're not, then it's all been for nothing. All the fighting, all the deaths. That's a quote from, you guessed it, a book in the Farsala trilogy. I tried to pick a meaningful passage that wouldn't spoil anything in case any of you want to read the books (I HIGHLY recommend them).

Isn't that quote so true? If you're fighting for something, you have to want to be better than the people you're fighting. If you want to be in the popular crowd, you ought to want to bring about good changes, too. Same if you want to be the president. You can't run with the intention of being a worse president than the one before you. You have to be better. It's not about the old president. It's about you. It's about you being better.

*shrugs* I don't know. It just like that passage. And when you read it in context, it's even better.

I'm sick but I loved "The Glass Menagerie" :)

I'm sick. Stuffy nose, runny nose, lots of sneezing, I'm always cold, always tired...yeah. It sucks :( But, life goes on. :)

I'm hoping to get in a few thousand words of "Creepy" done today...Don't know how much luck I'll have when I don't feel that great. Paige will probably come down with a terrible fever or something. Hmm...not actually a bad idea. :D Anyway, I sent my story to Ellie yesterday and she read it and said she loved it. Maybe it's not as bad as I was afraid of. Ellie is extremely honest, so I know if she liked it all right, it can't be THAT bad :) We did discover some irrigularities and things that aren't quite plausible. I'll need to go back and rework those, but over all, I don't feel as bad about what I've done.

In school, we just read the book "The Glass Menagerie." I loved it! It has lots of good symbolism, and the story is also very funny and easy (for me at least) to relate to. It's a memory play. In other words, it is the way the narrator, Tom, remembers and perceives various events. The book, which is actually a play, centers around the small Wingfield family: the mother, Amanda, and young adult children Laura and Tom. They all have very different personalities, which makes for an interesting family life. Amanda is determined to make sure that Laura, who is shy to a debilitating degree, has a good future. Amanda uses Tom’s income to insure that, which makes Tom justifiably bitter. He feels obligated to take care of his family, but really wants to leave his small life and seek out adventure, or write poetry. He only sticks around because he feels his duty to his family and he doesn't want to be like his father, who ran out on the family.

The play is pretty short and it was easy to read. I love the symbolism of the glass menagerie, which is Laura's collection of little glass animal figurines. She tends to them all day, keeping them clean and arranged the way she likes them. This symbolizes the fragile little world she likes to live in instead of facing reality. There is a lot more symbolism in the glass menagerie than what I just said, but I don't want to spoil everything. The play has a very good, although highly unexpected ending. (If you find it to read it, DON'T READ THE BACK OF IT FIRST. It gives away everything. I did not read the back, and enjoyed the book. When I read the back after I was finished, I was VERY glad I hadn't read it beforehand.)

Yeah, well, that's pretty much all I can think of for now. School went well today. It was pretty fun. A guy in my class sprained his ankle after school playing basketball in the parking lot, so that's too bad :( But other than that, nothing particularly interesting happened.

Hope I can get some "Creepy" written!! Come on, creativity! I need ya! :) TTYL!

Twilight Review Again

MY PERSONAL TWILGHT REVIEW: YESS! I FINALL SAW IT AGAIN! My next review is much better :D

TWILIGHT: *** and a half to **** stars!

OVER-ALL: GREAT! It could have been better, but it was still really good! I loved it!

GOOD PARTS:
1. Alice was absolutely perfect. Could not have been any better.
2. The scene at the Cullens' house was hilarious!
3. Jacob was great.
4. Emmett was perfect.
5. Rosalie was good.
6. Charlie wasn't really like the book that much, but he was really funny, so that's okay.
7. Bella's lullaby was PERFECT. (Only I looked and it's not Bella's lullaby lol but it was still perfect for that piano scene!)
8. The graduation cap part was funny.
9. Edward's skin was really good in the sun.
10. The baseball scene was awesome!
11. I thought Victoria was good.
12. I love it when Edward fixes the dent in Bella's truck lol!

PARTS THAT WERE OKAY/WEREN'T RIGHT BUT IT DIDN'T MATTER:
1. Bella went straight to the ballet studio instead of stopping by her house. (That was okay. I can understand that.)
2. I didn't like how Carlisle, like, went crazy in the flashbacks of him changing Edward. It looked like he was eating his neck. Ew. Lol!

BAD PARTS:
1. Jasper...yeah, he was weird.
2. Renee wasn't right at all. Much too old.
3. The part when Bella has to leave Charlie was EXTREMELY unemotional, which is so wrong.
4. Edward never gets mad at Bella in the movie. (And we all know THAT'S a big lie lol)
5. Edward is too easy to calm down and convince that Bella's plan is a good one.6. Edward goes crazy when sucking Bella's blood out in the movie.
7. They left out the entire part when they do the blood testing in biology and Bella faints.
8. The whole 20 questions thing when Edward and Bella take turns quizzing each other didn't even happen.
9. Edward never mentions how they hunt, that they don't have to breathe, or what Jasper's "talent" is.
10. Jasper never even uses his "talent."
11. Edward keeps slipping up. He'll be like, "I heard his thoughts!" and Bella will be like, "What??" and Edward tries to cover it up. Um, no. He's had over a hundred years to work on not slipping up. He would not just randomly blurt stuff out like that.

See?? I was much nicer this time lol! I cut out seven bad things and added four good things. :D Go see it! It's great!

Twilight Review (by ME :D)

Over-all:
Not thaaaaat bad. I still liked seeing it, and I'm sure I'll like it better the next time around. I always do with movies. It's just that I don't understand why they did some things. It could have been such an amazing movie, and it wouldn't even have taken that much effort to make it that way. So, I just don't understand why they didn't do a better job. But, still a good movie, glad I saw it, can't WAIT to see it again, and, okay, Emmett looked GOOD :) LOL!

7. The part when Bella has to leave Charlie was EXTREMELY unemotional, which is so wrong.
8. Alice and Emmett weren't in the Jeep with Edward and Bella when they were running from James.
9. Edward never gets mad at Bella in the movie. (And we all know THAT'S a big lie lol)
10. Edward is too easy to calm down and convince that Bella's plan is a good one.
11. Edward goes crazy when sucking Bella's blood out in the movie. (Sooooo not like the book and really freaky.)
12. The "meadow" part absolutely sucked (No pun intended lol and sorry, I gotta be honest. It wasn't even a meadow in the movie. :( ).
13. They left out the entire part when they do the blood testing in biology and Bella faints.
14. The whole 20 questions thing when Edward and Bella take turns quizzing each other didn't even happen.
15. Edward never mentions how they hunt, that they don't have to breathe, or what Jasper's "talent" is.
16. Jasper never even uses his "talent."
17. Edward keeps slipping up. He'll be like, "I heard his thoughts!" and Bella will be like, "What??" and Edward tries to cover it up. Um, no. He's had over a hundred years to work on not slipping up. He would not just randomly blurt stuff out like that.
18. They don't make it clear how Carlisle changed everyone.

Still, don't freak out. Go see it. It's not terrible, it just could have been better. Can't wait to see it again!!
